The grieving monkey

The term 'animal' is often used by us humans to infer a lack of intelligence, empathy or even emotions. Anyone who has spent any time around animals knows that the use of this term in that context is far from the truth.

A recent trip into the jungle made me cry. We came across a lone Langur sat in the road, and as we approached it did not move, barely acknowledging our existence. The reason why became clear as we saw the limp lifeless body of a baby in her arms. She was grieving. She would not let go of her baby, nothing else mattered and you can see it on her face.
