PhotoBlog
This site also documents my return to photography, one image a day, one story at a time.
Travel - Daroji Bear Sanctuary
I was a recent trip to Hampi with my wife and son and, well, could not pass up the opportunity to visit the Daroji Bear Sanctuary. It does not have safari's, but you stand atop of a rocky outcrop looking over the boulder strewn forest that is the sanctuary, hoping to glimpse a sloth bear! We got lucky and saw three!
Interview - Ferdy Christant (JungleDragon)
Taking pictures is only the beginning of your images story... the rest depends on you, and who sees it. I spent a long time looking for the best place to display my images, somewhere that is well organised and makes my images look good (unlike Facebook). This is where JungleDragon came in, and I must say, it is my go-to place for sharing all my wildlife images. You should all check it out! :)
This is an interview with Ferdy, the brains behind JungleDragon, and a great photographer in his own right. I hope you find it interesting.
Quick-tips - Keep trying!
When I head out into the jungle, there is no guarantee that I will see something new (less and less likely the more I go in fact), so I am constantly trying to get the best image I can of commonly sighted subjects.
Travel - Birds and Bandipur!
I led the first of my series of "Weekend Warrior" workshops this weekend taking some really great young photographers away for the weekend, leaving Bangalore early on Saturday and returning on Sunday afternoon... Sloth bears (yes plural), being one of the highlights of this trip!
My logic loop, or How I shoot wildlife
When out shooting wildlife, I have a general looping thought process for taking images, so that I am always ready for a surprise appearance, and can then make the most of each chance!
Quick-tips - Pre-visualization, planning and knowledge
I am frequently asked, “How did you get that shot?” to which I answer vaguely “time”. However, there are some very particular steps I go through in order to get my shots, and I am going to share them with you using a recent picture as an example.
Interview - Andries Alberts
I came across Andries on JungleDragon (a wildlife community website). Not only does he have some fantastic images, but some jaw-dropping wildlife stories from his time working in the wilds of Namibia!
Quick-tips - Lighting Night time Wildlife
Shooting in low light conditions is tough enough, so how can we shoot in dark? Well... bring you own light.. Any light!
Quick-tips - What lens next?
"What lens should I get next?" is a common question I am asked and it is not a simple answer. But one little trick i use to help me decide which lens i should buy next is to examine my current lens/focal length usage. By looking at this information you can see if you need a direct lens upgrade, or to go longer/wider... I hope this video helps! :)
Travel - Bhitarkanika, Odisha
Bhitarkanika in Odisha, is a lesser known national park, but well worth the visit if you are in the area. It is famous for The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) with nearly 10% of them over 6 meters long. I found it fantastic for king fishers, and i was pretty much alone the whole day I spent there!
KYS - Bonnet Macaques
Before endeavouring to photograph a new (or any) subject, it is important to limit any risk to you or to stress the subject. The following questions are designed to help in this situation, so great images can be created and no harm done. This is were Shreejata Gupta came in, my local monkey expert, who kindly helped us to Know Your Subject (KYS)! :)
News - The French wolf saga continues
Some French wolf saga continues, with the European Commission being involved. I have been following this story since July (SOME BAD NEWS FOR FRENCH WOLVES & THINGS GET WORSE FOR THE FRENCH WOLF) and I find it concerning...
